Kuwait, August 16, 2025 – Vice President Sara Duterte visited Kuwait for a two-day engagement with the overseas Filipino community, reaffirming her commitment to advocate for the welfare and rights of Filipino migrant workers.

The visit, organized in cooperation with local Filipino groups such as the Maisug in Kuwait Organization, brought together around 900 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) eager to hear from the Vice President. Duterte emphasized the vital contributions of OFWs to the Philippine economy and society, highlighting their sacrifices and resilience while working abroad.

During her address, the Vice President acknowledged the challenges faced by migrant workers in Kuwait and assured them that their voices remain central to government priorities. “We must work toward a future where going abroad is no longer a necessity but a choice,” she told the crowd, drawing loud applause from attendees.

A notable moment in the event came when Duterte conveyed a personal message from her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained in The Hague. She relayed his gratitude for the support and prayers of Filipinos in Kuwait, a gesture that touched many in the audience.

Beyond speeches, Duterte personally engaged with attendees, taking selfies and exchanging words of encouragement. This personal connection resonated strongly with the community, leaving many OFWs feeling recognized and valued.

The Office of the Vice President (OVP) defended the official nature of the trip amid questions on her recent travels abroad, clarifying that no public funds were used and that such engagements fall squarely within her mandate to advocate for the Filipino people.

Despite criticisms, Duterte reaffirmed her intention to continue reaching out to Filipinos overseas, noting that such visits strengthen the bond between the government and its citizens abroad.

Her Kuwait trip underscored a powerful message: while millions of Filipinos continue to find opportunities outside the country, the vision remains to create a Philippines where working abroad is a choice rather than a lifeline.
