Philippines Secures Assurances from Iran on Safe Passage in Strait of Hormuz

MANILA, 02 April 2026 – Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro held a productive phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation across various areas.

During the call, Minister Araghchi assured that Iran will continue to allow the safe, unhindered, and expeditious passage of Philippine-flagged vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, including energy shipments and all Filipino seafarers navigating the region.

Secretary Lazaro emphasized that this development is significant for the Philippines, as it not only safeguards Filipino seafarers working in the area but also reinforces the country’s energy security.

With the Philippines importing a substantial portion of its energy requirements from the Middle East, these assurances are expected to support the steady and reliable delivery of essential oil and fertilizer supplies.

Both officials concluded the conversation by reaffirming their commitment to maintaining strong bilateral relations and promoting lasting peace through sustained dialogue and diplomacy.
