A domestic helper in Hong Kong has been charged with animal cruelty after a dog died while under her care at her employer’s residence in To Kwa Wan, Kowloon.
The defendant, L. Portelo, 38, appeared before Magistrate Philip Chan at Kowloon City Court, where she was ordered remanded in custody pending further proceedings.
According to the charge filed by Kowloon City Police, Portelo allegedly “repeatedly kicked a dog” inside a flat at the Sky Tower on Sung Wong Toi Road on September 14. The dog was later pronounced dead by authorities.
The case is being prosecuted under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance, which carries a maximum penalty of a fine of HK$200,000 and up to three years of imprisonment for offenders found guilty.
The hearing has drawn attention from both legal observers and animal welfare groups, highlighting the seriousness of Hong Kong’s laws against animal cruelty.
