DAVAO CITY — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) formally commenced the development of a dedicated Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Lounge at Davao City International Airport on 23 December 2025, marking another major step in strengthening government support facilities for migrant workers.
The commencement ceremony signaled the official start of construction for the new OFW Lounge, a project aligned with the directive of Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. during his 2024 State of the Nation Address (SONA) to establish special facilities and services for overseas Filipino workers nationwide. The initiative builds on the successful operations of OFW lounges currently serving workers at NAIA Terminals 1 and 3.
The ceremony was led by Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac, with key officials in attendance, including Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Secretary Leo Tereso Magno and representatives of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.
The OFW Lounge is targeted for completion between May and June 2026. Once operational, it is expected to provide a safe, comfortable, and worker-centered space for OFWs departing for overseas employment or returning home to their families. Planned amenities aim to address the unique needs of migrant workers, offering rest areas and supportive services that enhance their airport experience.
According to the DMW, the project reflects the government’s continuing commitment to deliver compassionate, dignified, and accessible services to the country’s “Bagong Bayani,” particularly in key regional gateways such as Mindanao. By expanding OFW-focused facilities beyond Metro Manila, the government underscores its recognition of the vital role played by migrant workers across all regions.
The DMW reiterated that programs like the Davao OFW Lounge form part of a broader, whole-of-government approach that places the Filipino worker and their family at the center of national development—honoring their sacrifices while ensuring their welfare remains a top priority.
