MANILA — Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac confirmed on Tuesday that the main suspect in the killing of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Dafnie Nacalaban has been convicted by a Kuwaiti court and sentenced to 14 years in prison.
“The new development here is the other case — the OFW who had been slain as well, found in the garden. Three other accessories were also convicted in their respective sentences as accomplices,” Cacdac said during a media briefing at the DMW office in Mandaluyong City.
Nacalaban’s tragic case came to light when the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported on December 31, 2024, that her body was discovered in the yard of her employer’s home in Saad Al-Abdullah, Jahra.
She had been reported missing by her second employer in October 2024 after suddenly losing contact. Nacalaban, who began working in Kuwait in December 2019, was later found in an advanced state of decomposition following a police report filed by the sibling of the suspect.
The Kuwaiti national suspect, known to have a criminal record, later confessed to killing Nacalaban. Her remains were repatriated to the Philippines on February 21, 2025, through the coordinated efforts of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the DMW.
Meanwhile, Secretary Cacdac also disclosed that the Philippine government is currently appealing another case involving a Filipino worker convicted for the death of her employer’s son.
“Yes, she had been convicted, but that matter is on appeal,” Cacdac said. “We have provided her with legal counsel and she continues to receive regular visits from our legal team in Kuwait.”
