MANILA, Philippines — Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) recently repatriated from Kuwait recounted moments of fear and distress amid ongoing tensions, while expressing gratitude to the Philippine government for facilitating their safe return home.
One of the returnees described sleepless nights due to constant sirens and nearby explosions, forcing them to repeatedly seek shelter.
“Hindi po kami makatulog. Kada may siren, may pagsabog na nagaganap malapit sa amin. Takot na takot po talaga kami,” she said.
Despite the difficult circumstances, the OFWs noted that the repatriation process was well-organized and that they were properly assisted throughout their journey back to the Philippines.
“Lahat po ng staff, alagang-alaga kami. Wala po kaming masasabi kundi pasasalamat,” another returnee shared.
The group also expressed relief upon reuniting with their families after the ordeal. One OFW revealed that her mother had been hospitalized due to anxiety over her situation abroad.
“Nawala po yung kaba namin nung makauwi na kami. Makakapiling na namin ang pamilya namin,” she said.
Under the government’s repatriation program, the workers received financial assistance, medical aid, and basic necessities. Many described the support as crucial in helping them recover and start over.
Several OFWs said they now prefer to find employment closer to home, citing the emotional toll of working abroad, especially for those with families.
“Bilang solo parent, gusto ko na pong magtrabaho malapit sa pamilya ko. Ayaw ko na pong iwanan sila,” one said.
However, others acknowledged the need to continue working to support their children’s education.
“May mga anak pa po akong nag-aaral. Kailangan ko pa pong magtrabaho ulit,” another OFW explained.
The repatriates also appealed for assistance for fellow Filipinos who remain in Kuwait, including children and those in poor health.
“Sana po matulungan pa yung mga naiwan doon. May mga bata at may mga may sakit pa po,” they said.
While some received financial aid, many emphasized that their priority was returning home safely.
“Hindi ko po inexpect ang tulong pinansyal. Ang importante po sa akin, makauwi kami nang ligtas,” one OFW said.
The workers extended their gratitude to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., as well as the Department of Migrant Workers and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration for their assistance.
They also expressed hope that government support for OFWs will continue, especially during emergencies.
“Sana po ‘wag silang magsawang tumulong sa aming mga OFW,” they said.
