Filipinos in Egypt Illegally Staying Given Until March 15, 2024 to Legalize Their Status

The Philippine Embassy in Cairo has announced that Filipinos who are living illegally in Egypt have only until March 15, 2024, to correct or legitimize the status of their residency.

In an advisory, the embassy stated that the Egyptian government had extended the grace period of illegal foreigners in Egypt by another three months. The original deadline was December 15, 2023.

According to Decree no 3326/2023 issued by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly in August last year, foreigners seeking tourist and non-tourist residence permits in Egypt must provide evidence of payment of all relevant fees, such as residency fees, late fines, or residence card issuance, whether in US dollars or equivalent foreign currencies.

The embassy stated that all Filipinos living in Egypt, without any official announcements amending the existing laws, must obtain work permits and licenses from the Ministry of Manpower or its affiliated offices.

The statement also stated that foreigners who want to work as domestic workers in Egypt will not be issued work visas or permits.

The embassy said that it is the Egyptian spouse’s responsibility to assist Filipinos and their kids in obtaining Egyptian residence visas, birth and marriage certificates, and IDs.

Filipinos in Egypt are reminded to always keep their passport valid, not their employer or sponsor. -GMA News
