As if adding salt to the injury, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) draws the general public’s rage once more, this time involving Filipina boxer and mixed martial arts fighter Jujeath Nagaowa.

Nagaowa posted her Customs horror story in her Facebook, saying she was hurt when she found out she needed to pay P5,819 in taxes to get her championship belt through customs.

She won the international light flyweight title of the Women’s International Boxing Association (IBA) on June 8. The association recently shipped her championship belt.

The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) has expressed their disappointment over the BOC. GAB commissioner Aquil Tamano said the BOC should have exercised common sense in taxing someone who has given glory and pride to the country.

BOC commissioner Alberto Lina said Nagaowa can get a refund if she could get an exemption from the Department of Finance.
