OFW Families Warned Against Enrolling Children in Unaccredited Philippine Schools Abroad

TAGAYTAY CITY — Overseas Filipino families are being urged to verify whether Philippine schools abroad are officially accredited, as students from unrecognized institutions may encounter problems once they continue their education in the Philippines.

Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) Chairperson Secretary Dante “Klink” Ang II said children enrolled in unaccredited Philippine Schools Overseas (PSOs) could face difficulties in having their academic records recognized by schools in the country.

Speaking during a media training at the Development Academy of the Philippines in Tagaytay, Ang emphasized the importance of transparency among schools operating overseas.

He explained that students from non-accredited institutions may be required to take bridging programs or could even be placed in lower grade levels when transferring to Philippine schools. This situation may also result in additional financial burdens for OFW families.

According to Ang, many overseas schools promote themselves as Philippine schools despite lacking authorization from the Department of Education (DepEd).

He cited East Timor as an example, where only one Philippine school is officially recognized, while several other institutions reportedly market themselves as Philippine schools without accreditation.

Ang also noted that some schools are legally permitted to offer vocational or language training programs but are not authorized to teach the Philippine basic education curriculum. Others, he added, operate informally or through online platforms.

Most reported concerns have come from countries with large Filipino communities, particularly in the Gulf region, where demand for Philippine-style education remains high.

To address the issue, the CFO has been coordinating with DepEd and foreign governments to release advisories identifying recognized Philippine schools abroad.

Ang encouraged unaccredited schools to secure proper authorization from DepEd to avoid possible sanctions and to ensure students’ educational credentials will be recognized in the Philippines.

The list of Philippine Schools Overseas (PSOs) is attached to serve as a guide for parents, students and those who are accessing schools that are DepEd-accredited adopting the Philippine K-12 Curriculum.
