Maltreated OFW Losses Money Inside Quarantine Facility

Recently, a video of a Filipina domestic helper went viral because of her pitiful situation.

Maribel Cantillo from Aurora Province worked as a domestic helper in Kuwait. Fellow OFWs were taking the video of Maribel while she was in the airport to ask for help.

According to Maribel, she was maltreated by her employer and didn’t have money when she returned to the Philippines. They were on a stopover in Dubai from Kuwait when fellow OFWs noticed that the woman kept on crying. It is said that her employer didn’t feed her for two days. She fell unconscious when she was at the airport.

“Hindi naman po ako makakuha ng pagkain kasi bakit daw ako kakain, e hindi naman daw ako nagtatrabaho,” says Maribel as she relates her experience.

As a result, they decided to gather some money for the OFW so she can return to her family in the Philippines at least with some money at hand.

For the two years of being employed, Maribel didn’t even have a day of break. She also endured the maltreatment of her employer.

What made Maribel really furious was when her employer refused to give the money that she expected to receive. Instead of paying full her two-month salary worth 260 Dinar (P43,000), she only received 50 Dinar (P8,000).

Unfortunately, when she arrived in the quarantine facility, a fellow OFW stole the money that other OFWs in the airport gave her. The incident was already reported to the police.

OWWA promised to help the distressed OFW.
